Through the lives of seven interconnected couples we experiences some of the ups and downs of pregnancy.
So loosely based on Murkoff’s book that it is merely inspired by, What to Expect When You’re Expecting bases its story on the different pregnancy problems mentioned in the book to create a story line where a wide area of the problems are shown through the stories of seven different couples. The idea is good and works well as both a dramatic and a humorous aspect. Right from the impossible young and glowing woman gliding through pregnancy to the troubled woman suffering from a weak bladder and acne is covered while the movie manages to stay surprisingly lighthearted despite the occasional heavy subjects. An upbeat Banks (Zack and Miri Make A Porn, 2008) quickly takes the center stage together with an incredible charming Falcone (Tammy, 2014) as her husband, but everyone gets to shine right down to Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike, 2012) in a small part as the hunk the ‘man-group’ admires. It is a fluffy and entertaining movie that doesn’t leave you with much impact, but the cast as well as the characters are likable and touching performances from the likes of Banks, Falcon, Lopez (The Wedding Planner, 2001), Santoro (Love Actually, 2003) and Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, 2012) manage to give it heart.
When Heather Hach was hired to write the screenplay she was pregnant, making her the perfect person to write a script about pregnancy.
