As failed reporter Eddie Brock (Hardy) pursue a story hoping to bring down ruthless scientist Drake (Ahmed) he encounters an alien symbiote who chooses him as a host. Soon he fins himself chased by Drake’s men who wants it back, but Brock is not easy to catch once the symbiote takes over.
We have encountered the symbiote Venom on film before in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 (2007) but here he gets to stand alone as the lead character together with Brock and it suits him. It is an interesting character with his black oily skin, impossible large mouth full of teeth with the long snake-like tongue. Disgusting but still fascinating and rather cool. Hardy has tried his hands with the superhero world before playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and undoubtedly has the talent to tackle the dual character without the balance ever tipping over to silly. While the story is darker and with less humour than what we have become used to when it comes to Marvel movies, it has well-working action-sequences and makes you empathetic to a slimy beast, that is quite a feat. Not the best Marvel movie but good enough to leave you excited for the announced sequel.
Tom Hardy voices Venom himself. He recorded his lines for the Venom symbiote during pre-production, and they were played back to the actor through an earpiece on set during scenes where Brock and the symbiote talk to each other
