As a result of an experiment, Julius Benedict (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is the perfect human being; athletic, strong, intelligent. On his 35th birthday he discovers there where a side effect of the experiment: a twin brother! Eager to meet his brother, the innocent Julius who has grown up on a tropical island, immediately travels to the United States to find his brother Vincent (Danny DeVito). But the two brothers are different in more than looks. After growing up in an orphanage, Vincent is a small-time crook and in money trouble. Just as Julius arrives Vincent’s trouble increases and his brother steps in to help.
In between major hits Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, Reitman made this charming crime comedy about the world’s two most unlikely twins. The biggest joke of the movie is the fact, that the two lead characters couldn’t look anymore different, the tall muscular Schwarzenegger (True Lies, 1994) and the short DeVito (Batman Returns, 1992) are as far from each other in looks as they could possible be. But their characters are also different in personality. While Julius has spent his life isolated on a tropical island that has left him an innocent soul, the rough beginning Vincent have had in his life has given him a more rough personality. The book-smart Julius and street-wise Vincent are a good match and the duo personalities when they are together works really well. As their road trip goes from money-making business, to search for their unknown mother with an angry gang on their heals, the pace of the movie accelerates into an entertaining crime comedy. Pure nostalgic trip for people who grew up with movies like this in the 1980s and worth a watch for anyone else, who wish to entertain themselves with a movie where DeVito and Schwarzenegger play twins.
The money was not available to pay to the two main stars and the director their normal fees. They decided to split a percentage of the gross profits between the three of them and ended up making more than they would have made taking their fees upfront because the film was such a hit. Arnold Schwarzenegger made more money from Twins than any Terminator-movies.
