Gene (Miller) is a meh-emoji with trouble sticking to one expression. For some reason he can make all expressions. After he panics and destroys the text center he escapes to find a hacker who can fix him.

Despite doing excellently at the box office, the first major animated feature from writer/director Leondis (Lilo & Stitch 2, 2005) was panned by the critics, named unfunny and a waste of time. Perhaps the reason is, that the audience for this movie isn’t middle-aged critics or adults at all (except those with their inner child intact, perhaps), but more the younger audience who grew up with the Emojis of the movie as a natural part of their lives. You can choose to consider the movie a waste of time, or you can rejoice in the way it plays with the world taking place behind the screens. It is almost like Toy Story (1995) for the digital age. Mind you, not as brilliant as Disney’s tale on toys alone, but not as bad as rumour has it either.

Sony invited Jack Douglass, owner of the “jacksfilms” YouTube channel, to the world premiere because he praised it sarcastically.
