After loosing her husband, Stella (Pham) discovers he kept secret from her, that she was loosing the family farm. In an attempt to save her family’s heritage she joins a program that allows her working with convicts to rehabilitate a herd of wild horses that wandered on to her property. But there are people who believe wild horses should remain wild.
Running Wild is like a Barbara Cartland novel with horses saved slightly by solid performances. Pham (He’s Such a Girl, 2009) is convincing as the widow ranch owner but the nice surprise is Flanagan (Braveheart, 1995) whose convict is the character going through most growth in the movie. There are plenty of horses and cowboy hats to satisfy female fans of western dramas. The story is a classic ranch story set up, except the bad guys use politics and demonstrations instead of guns, led by a subdued Stone (Basic Instinct, 1992). So if you ever wondered what the former leading lady where doing these days, now you know, and it’s not all that impressive. It has its moments but is quite forgettable.
The location used for Stella’s ranch is also the house used as the location for the last act of the Wes Craven film ‘Scream’.
