Monster Family

monster family official poster

Release year: 2017

Screenwriter: David Safier, Catharina Junk, David Safier (based on the book ‘Happy Family’ by)

The may be called the Wishbones but they are far from a happy family. The husband Frank always works, the boy Max is being bullied and the daughter Fay is the typical rude teenager while the mother Emma struggles keeping her business open. When the great count Dracula falls head over heals in love with Emma he orders a with to turn her into a vampire, so she can live happily ever after with him. But the entire family is turned into monsters and now they must work together to get their lives back.

A broken family put in a situation forcing them to work together is far from a new spin on a family flick. However, the situation being the family turned into monsters is and works well, especially as it uses all the stereotypes connected to the monster types. The quality of the animation shows this isn’t from the biggest companies (Disney or Dreamworks) when it comes to the characters but the background visuals leaves nothing wanting and will awe you on several occasions. Each character is recognizable and someone you can relate with but they also react sensible driving the story forward to an entertaining adventure. Not Oscar worthy or bound to become a classic, but cute and entertaining.

Moviegeek info:

This movie is based on a short 4D cinema/ride at a tourist attraction in the UK called ‘Wookey Hole’. The animation and basic premise are the same – a family transformed into monsters – but it occurs on a roller coaster ride.
