After putting his past as an assassin behind, Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) lives in peace in Rio until his past catches up on him. Now he is once again forced to take his murderous skills in use, to regain his quiet life and save the girl.
The first movie where Jason Statham played top-assassin Bishop was The Mechanic from 2011, which was a remake of the 1972 movie by the same name. In this 2016 action movie Statham (The Transporter, 2002) returns to his role as Bishop, once again staying two steps ahead of the bad guys. The buff Brit has martial skills and the ability to make a mean look to make villains shake in their pants which makes him convincing as a feared assassin, but the decision to give him something to care for and loose, weakens the character. Alba (Sin City, 2005) and Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000) are both good as the females in Bishop’s new life and none of them as helpless as women in action flicks often are and Jones (No Country for Old Men, 2007) is pure delight as crime boss Max Adams. It is an entertaining action movie that will satisfy fans of the genre, but sadly it doesn’t quite live up to the first. A slow start building up Bishop’s relationships takes time from the otherwise well-working assassins, where you wish they would have put more focus.
The picture filmed on four continents and in six countries: Australia, Europe (Bulgaria), South America (Brazil), and Asia (Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia).
