Aurora’s (Fanning) Prince Charming (Dickinson) asks her to marry him. As she meets his parents King John (Robert Lindsay) and Queen Ingrith (Pfeiffer) together with her godmother Maleficent (Jolie), she and Maleficent begins questioning their bond. But sometimes evil is more hidden than Maleficent’s pointy horns.
The dark fey of the Sleeping Beauty got her own story with 2014’s Maleficent, but now she returns in the hands of Norwegian director Rønning (Pirate’s of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, 2017) but still played by Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, 2005). Jolie has the elegant looks to fit the dark beauty and luckily the talents to follow. Fanning (Super 8, 2011) continues being sweet as sugar as Aurora and the two together brings great balance to the movie; never to sweet and never to dark. The story is simple, part fairytale and part origin story as we get to know more about where Maleficent comes from. It looks stunning and as Jolie knows how to capture your attention as well as look through the villain appearance and see the sea of emotions beneath, she gives to story a suitable emotional core. Good fairytale with dark touches and a great Jolie.
To be released on the 60th anniversary of the original Cinderella (1959).
