College student Tree (Rothe) wakes up on her birthday after a drunken night in the room of Carter Davis (Broussard), goes about her day, go to a party, is killed on the way and wakes up on her birthday in the room of Carter Davis. Now Tree must try to find out who the killer is, hoping it will end the time loop seeing her killed again and again.
The time loop set-up often works well for comedy effect (just think of the classic comedy Groundhog Day ,1993) and this dark version in form of a horror comedy is no exception. The death situations are so different from each other, that it never gets boring despite the victim being the same and there is genuine humour involved, especially in the section where Tree sets out to identify the killer by trailing suspects. A big reason as of why the movie works is a charming and starmaking performance from Rothe (Forever My Girl, 2018) who manage screams as well as comedy while completely winning you over as a character. Surprisingly entertaining and fresh take on the slasher genre.
The Bayfield University Baby killer costume was designed by Tony Gardner, who also designed the Ghostface mask, the horror icon of the Scream franchise and which is a reworked version of the Father’s Death Halloween costume.
