Finally out of the time loop Tree (Rothe) can finally relax. Right until her new boyfriend’s (Broussard) roommate Ryan (Vu) storms in the room explaining that he is living the same day over and over again. It turns out the time loop comes from an experiment made by Ryan and his friends and soon Tree is dragged into a time loop again but this one leaves her with some tough decisions.
The movie starts out with a stronger sci-fi element than the first movie and with Phi Vu’s (Pitch Perfect 2, 2015) in the lead making you sigh a bit in disappointment, that the sequel to the surprisingly good Happy Death Day (2017) seems to fall flat. But once the reign is put back into the hands of the amazing Rothe (La La Land, 2016) and her knack for mixing humour and horror, the movie is raised, not to the level of the first but close enough to not disappoint. The sci-fi element is interesting though it takes something away from the horror element but the cast is amazing, especially Rothe, and together they make this horror comedy an entertaining watch.
For the scenes inside the university hospital, the sets had to be rebuilt from scratch for this film, as the actual hospital used in the first film had been gutted.
