With no kids of his own, Brad (Ferrell) tries hard to be the perfect stepdad for his wife’s (Cardellini) two kids. Just when he is beginning to bond with them, their real dad (Wahlberg) shows up, cooler, tougher and determined to take his family back.
If you are familiar with the comedies starring Ferrell (Blades of Glory, 2007), then you know what kind of humour to expect of this family friendly comedy. Though, the humour here is toned down compared to what we usually see from the curly-haired comedian. Once again teaming up with Wahlberg (Ted, 2012) with whom he starred in the hilarious The Other Guys (2010) and once again, the two shares great chemistry. As in their previous movie together, a lot of the chemistry is found in the two’s ability to create entertaining enemies. With the cool Dusty opposite the sensitive Brad, the scene is set for plenty of jokes. But this isn’t just a comedy focusing on jokes, there are some sincere struggles of split families present and towards the ending the story moves toward more sentimentality than what will suit all. But it is a good comedy and Ferrell and Wahlberg once again deliver the goods, making you anticipate the sequel.
