After the go to Munich to spread the ashes of their dead grandfather Johann von Wolfhaus (Donald Sutherland), Jan (Paul Soter) and Todd (Erik Stolhanske) stumble across a highly secret underground beer competition: Beerfest. After being ridiculed by their uncle Baron Wolfgang von Wolfhausen (Jürgen Prochnow) the brothers decide to gather a strong team to train for a year before returning to win the competition.

Comedy group Broken Lizard has written and starred in several movie productions, most famously Super Troopers (2001) and was granted a deal with Warner Bros after Chandrasekhar directed The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) that ensured Beerfest could be made. This beer comedy plays strongly with the stereotypes of different nationalities, leaving its humour up to your ability to find the amusement in stereotyping, whether or not there are any truth in them. Luckily Beerfeest looks as much inwards as outwards to find jokes and does so with a glint in its eyes making it charming enough to care for. All the members of Broken Lizard does a good job and are well supported by the always amusing Leachman (Spanglish, 2004) and, quite surprisingly, Prochnow (Das Boot, 1981). A fun little movie that will entertain people enjoying silly comedies.

Moviegeek info:

Beerfest was inspired by Broken Lizard’s experiences at Colgate University, as well as a spontaneous “boat race” drinking contest at a beer festival between the comedy troupe members and Australians during the promotion of Super Troopers (2001). The names of some of the characters in Beerfest are taken from classmates and fraternity brothers at Colgate University, including the nickname “Landfill” and a brief mention of “Tommy Malarky”. After the German cast members completed their final day of filming, the American and German cast competed in another boat race; the Broken Lizard team won two out of three games.
