When dedicatedsingle mum Simone (Coel) is dragged out for a night on the town by her wild sister Yvonne (Adekoluejo) she meets and falls for Raymond (Kene). But he has a past and Simone is unsure she dares open her heart and let him into the life of her and her daughter.
Been so Long is based on the musical based on the plat by the same name and is a more realistic take on romance than most of the genre. Coel (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, 2017) and Kene (The Pass, 2016) are good in the leads but lacks chemistry, meaning they come of more emotional driven when apart. Their singing talents are fine but the songs they share dull and both are musical overshadowed by MacKay (Captain Fantastic, 2016), who despite a much smaller part gets the two best musical numbers of the movie. While it is nice to see a more realistic love story told in the musical genre, the movie occasionally slips into cliches making you unsure what style it is going for. It is rather mediocre but interesting and with great talent among the cast.
In September 2017, Netflix bought worldwide rights to the film, in what was a “multi-million dollar deal”, believed to be Netflix’s largest single acquisition of a U.K. film at the time
